The Thousand and One Nights, Retold for Kids

Every night, clever Scheherazade tells King Shahryar a new story, and stops at the most exciting part. We are retelling the whole book for children, in the same order, from the first night to the thousand and first.

Each night is a short story you can read together in a few minutes. It comes with pictures, a lesson, questions to talk about and new words. Start at the beginning, or jump to the newest night.

Questions and answers

Is Arabian Nights for Kids free?

Yes. Every night is free to read and to listen to, with no ads and no sign-up.

What age are these Arabian Nights stories for?

They are written for children aged 6 to 12. Younger children enjoy them read aloud by a grown-up, and older children can read them alone.

Are the stories true to the original Arabian Nights?

Each night is retold from Richard F. Burton's 1885 translation, in the same order as the book, and links to the original text. We soften the parts that are not right for children, as our editorial policy explains.

Can my child listen to the stories?

Yes. Press "Listen to the story" on any night. A calm narrator reads it with a voice on your own device, with sound effects, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How often are new nights published?

Two new nights come out every day, in the same order as the book, until all 1,001 nights are ready.
