The merchant is the hero of the very first story Scheherazade tells. He is a rich trader who does business in many cities. The book never gives his name.
One day he rests under a tree and throws away his date stones. A furious jinni appears and says one of the stones killed his son. The merchant asks for one year to go home, pay his debts and say goodbye. Then he comes back, just as he promised.
Because he keeps his word, three old men stop to help him, each with an animal and a strange story. Read Night 1.
