Shah Zaman is the younger brother of King Shahryar. Shahryar made him king of Samarkand, and for twenty years he ruled it fairly.
The whole Arabian Nights begins with him. Shahryar missed his brother and invited him to visit. On the way, Shah Zaman was hurt by his own queen's dishonesty, and he arrived pale and sad. What he saw at his brother's palace changed both their lives. Read the prologue to find out how.
In the notes to his translation, Richard Burton says Shah Zaman is Persian for "King of the Age".
